Mexico as one of the largest suppliers of broccoli and cauliflower worldwide

From 2016 to 2020, Mexico was positioned as the second largest exporter of broccoli and cauliflower in the world, with a 19.2% share, according to local media.
This country was placed only below Spain, which is the leader in the sector, with an average export value of $302 million per year and an Average Annual Growth Rate (AAGR) of 12.9%.
In 2016-2020, the average export of these vegetables totaled 259,000 tons, with the United States being the main recipient (97.3% of the volume), followed by Canada (2.3%) and Japan (0.3%).
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, in that period, the average production of broccoli and cauliflower reached $28.2 million tons, with an AAGR of 1.2%.
In this way, Mexico was positioned in fifth place, with a participation of 2.4% and an average annual growth rate of 4.2%. China led the ranking as a producer, with 33.6%, followed by India (30.7%) and the United States (4.6%).
In 2021, broccoli production reached 596.000 tons, which is 13.000 more (2.2%) than in 2020. Meanwhile, cauliflower maintained its production volume of close to 100.000 tons. In 2016-2020, Mexico produced an average of 680.000 tons of both vegetables.
Producing Regions
Guanajuato was the main producer of broccoli and cauliflower in that period (61% of the total). The municipalities of Dolores Hidalgo, Valle de Santiago and San Luis de la Paz, generated 11.9%, 10.2% and 8.6% of production, respectively.
The second largest producer in the country, Puebla, produced 9.4% and registered an AAGR of 3.7%, with the municipalities of Palmar de Bravo, Quecholac and Los Reyes de Juárez being the main producers.
