Banana plantations damaged
FJ
In the Canary Islands, banana plantations have suffered serious damage.
The storm of rain and wind that hit the Canary Islands on March 3 has caused a lot of damage, mainly on the islands of La Palma and Tenerife.
Some areas have suffered severe damage: in the areas of Las Angustias, Amagar and La Punta, 70% of the crops would be destroyed. In addition, losses are estimated between 5 and 10% (Los Llanos de Aridane, Tazacorte, San Andrés, Sauces, Barlovento), between 10 and 15% (Puntallana) and a little more than 20% (Las Breñas).
According to ASPROCAN, the organization of producers, the damage is limited in the short term, but worrying in the long-term. The fall of many plants should lead to a decrease in production next year.
