Truck strike hard affected agriculture
Spain
Wednesday 25 June 2008
The strike of truck transporters that took place in Spain in the past two weeks has seriously affected the Country’s fruit and vegetable industry. At the beginning of last week the associations Fenadismer, Antid and Cofedetrans announced that they would temporarily suspend the stoppage of good transport by road.
Agricultural operators have therefore begun to make the first loss estimates, according to which producers and exporters lost returns - in the first three days of action only - around 100 million euros. According to producers-exporters federation FEPEX, in that period the average turnover is around 35 million euros per day.
The most significant losses hit the regions of Andalusia, with 39 million euros, and Murcia with 35. Then follow Extremadura with 13.5 millions, Valencia with 6.5 and Castilla-La Mancha with 6 millions. The most affected products seem to be stonefruits, watermelons and vegetables such as sweet pepper. Murcia for instance informs that around 8,550 tons of fresh produce per day remained unsold during the truck strike, of which 2,383 are vegetables and 6,167 stonefruits. Daily truck loaded with summer fruit from Murcia can reach in this period of the year the number of 428.
