Russia: vegetable production double

Production of vegetables doubled, reported representatives of the government press-cutting service to IA REGNUM-VolgaInform. The agrarian enterprises harvested almost 15.000 tonnes of open-soil vegetables, up twice compared to the gross crop in 2007.
At the beginning of November, harvesting campaign completed throughout the whole territory of the region. Vegetable crops were harvested from the whole sown area (762 ha) . In 2008, huge growth in potato production was recorded in the segment. 18.000 tonnes were harvested from more than 1.100 ha, up 1.8 times compared to the last year. The average potato yield totaled 156 c/ha, up 1.5 times compared to the index of the last year – 105 c/ha.
These results of the harvesting campaign leaded to decrease of selling prices for cabbage and potatoes by 15-20 % compared to 2007 that had a positive impact on food providing of the population. It should be noted that the harvest was laid for storing. At the moment all stores are full of vegetables. The stock totals nearly 14.000 tonnes of produce.
