The U.S. Department of Agriculture's eighth crop forecast for the 2006-07 season shows a decrease in Florida's total grapefruit crop by 1 million boxes to 27 million.
Reductions were made to both colored and white grapefruit. Colored grapefruit was reduced 500.000 boxes to 17.5 million, and white was reduced 500.000 to 9.5 million boxes.
"The reduction in the grapefruit estimate was not unexpected," said Michael W. Sparks, executive vice president/CEO of Lakeland-based Florida Citrus Mutual. "The estimate now more adequately reflects the actual harvest numbers year-to-date."
Besides the change in grapefruit, the total orange crop was reduced by 100.000. Early-mids accounted for the full reduction, ending at 62.75 million boxes. Navels and Valencias remained unchanged at 2.85 million and 65 million, respectively. Honeys and early varieties remained at 2.2 million and 2.4 million, respectively, and Tangelos remained at 1.25 million.
The Florida citrus industry has a $9.1 billion economic impact in the state, employs nearly 90.000 people and covers more than 620.000 acres in the state.
Florida Citrus Mutual, founded in 1948, is the state's largest citrus grower's organization with nearly 10.000 grower members.
