The Wholesale Market of the City of Mexico (CEDA), one of the largest in the world, will host the first WUWM Conference from 23 to 25 April 2008.
CEDA General Director and Administrator Mr Raymundo Collins Flores and the CEDA Coordinator for Planning and Development Mr Alberto Carrasco attended the WUWM 25th Congress in Beijing, China presenting a video to launch the conference and providing members with information on the event. Discussions are proposed to focus on the modernization of market installations, operations and security; as well as wholesale market promotional/marketing activities, and ways of remaining competitive in the global market. Technical visits will be made to the markets of Mexico City and Tultitlan.
CEDA employs some 70,000 people, has more than 55,000 delivery vehicles entering the market each day, with over 300,000 visitors. Over 80% of products from the market are destined for the metropolitan area of Mexico which now boasts some 20 million inhabitants. Its supply network covers 318 public markets, 29 commercial plazas or malls, 380 supermarkets, 15 chain retailers, over 1,160 ambulant street markets, and a countless number of independent retailers.
The conference is strongly supported by the Chief of the Government of the City of Mexico Mr Marcelo Ebrard Casaubón. By presidential decree in 1983, the market was classified as a public service with the objectives to guarantee the food supply to Mexico City, improve producer income, determine prices, organize and modernize the sale of fruit, vegetable and groceries, and provide access to basic fresh produce for low income consumers.
