Climatic problems, shrinking of areas, contraction of prices and resumption of imports.
In Brazil, banana production is declining, which professionals explain by the climatic problems and the contraction of prices. For this year the decline in production could reach 2.7% compared to 2017.
Banana production could decline by 2.7% from last year's production to 7 million tonnes. In some areas of the country, the decline will be more severe as in Bahia where the decline in production is estimated at 17%.
The drought that affected the Nordeste and Minas Gerais regions last year led to a reduction in yield per hectare. Another reason for the decline in production is the reduction in areas. According to IBGE data (Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística) the area reaches 478 000 hectares in 2018, a decrease of 1.8% compared to last year.
The resumption of banana imports from Ecuador has resulted in lower prices that do not encourage Brazilian producers. The majority of Brazilian production is destined for the domestic market. The volume of exports amounted to 41,300 tons of bananas, with Uruguay, Argentina and Poland as main destinations.
