At the heart of Apeel’s work is a simple but powerful idea: using nature to fight food waste.
Apeel Sciences, based in Santa Barbara, California, has been named one of Food & Wine’s 2025 Game Changers — a list that highlights companies reshaping the way we eat and drink. This recognition adds to a growing list of honors for Apeel, which was also recently ranked among the world’s top GreenTech firms by TIME and named the No. 1 company in Forward Fooding’s FoodTech 500.
At the heart of Apeel’s work is a simple but powerful idea: using nature to fight food waste. The company has developed a plant-based, edible coating that keeps fruits and vegetables fresher for longer — without refrigeration or synthetic chemicals. The coating is made from natural ingredients found in foods we already eat, and it has no taste or smell. This solution helps reduce spoilage across the supply chain, from farms and stores to people’s kitchens.
Thanks to this innovation, Apeel has already helped save 166 million pieces of fruit from being wasted, saved 1.8 billion gallons of water, and prevented over 64 million pounds of greenhouse gas emissions. These results support the company’s broader mission to make fresh food more accessible and sustainable for everyone.
“Apeel was built on the belief that nature holds the key to a better food system,” said Jenny Du, Co-Founder and SVP of Operations. “Being named a Food & Wine Game Changer is a proud moment for our team and a reflection of our ongoing efforts to tackle food waste head-on.”
