8,669.13 tons of Californian almonds imported to Russia in the last fiscal year
Despite the economic crisis and a significant decline in food imports to Russia, the imports of Californian almond to the country decreased by only 2% during the last fiscal year (ended in September) amounted to 19.7 million pounds (8,669.13 tons) compared with 20,1 million pounds (9,125.4 metric tons) supplied in 2007-2008.
According to analysts, during the last months the Russian almond market was able to recover. Currently Russia remains the largest sale market for California almonds in Eastern Europe, accounting for a 2,02% share of the total exports.
The almond is categorized botanically as a fruit. The sweet almond variety grows in California’s fertile Central Valley, delicate and slightly sweet in flavour, sweet almonds are readily available in supermarkets. California almonds also come in various forms including whole or flour, sliced or flake, slivered or halved, diced or chopped and in the form of butter, oil, milk, paste and marzipan. There are over 30 varieties of almonds grown in California.
The California almond industry has experienced three back-to-back record crops. The crop receipts for crop year 2008-09 touched 722,000 tons which is a year-to all-time best compared to 627,000 tons recorded in 2007-08. This compares with 317,000 tons at the beginning of the decade in 2000.
