Citrus production in Costa Rica would increase by almost 2% in 2022/23, reaching 305,000 tons, according to a recent GAIN report by USDA.
Denser plantings on larger farms consequently drive up yields, while citrus greening management programs mitigate the worst impacts of the virus.
Citrus greening disease
was first reported in the country in 2011 and remains a major concern for local growers. The disease results in higher production costs, lower yields, uncertainty to future growing plants, and limits growth of production areas.
Some farms have succeeded in mitigating the effects of the disease by carrying out strict controls, including farm surveillance, eradication of affected trees, and use of agrochemicals and biological controls as preventive measures.
