The fresh produce industry revealed its development potential at the 25th edition of Macfrut. This year’s event also saw the launch of the Fresh-Cut Produce Show and the Macfrut International Project.
(Cesena, 25 April 2008) At this year’s edition of Macfrut, which was held in Cesena from 17 to 19 April, the fresh produce industry showed off its full potential, its capacity for innovation, its high-quality produce and the export capabilities of the major Italian producers.
The event has always served as an important bridge between Italian fruit and vegetable producers and overseas markets, in addition to providing an invaluable showcase for the industry’s most important technological innovations. The success of the Macfrut formula was borne out by the figures for this year’s show: 30,000 square metres of exhibition area in which 700 exhibitors (of whom 25% came from abroad, including from China and India) welcomed 21,500 visitors and 70 foreign delegations.
A french delegation was provided by Fructidor.com in agreement with Cesena Fiera, who credited Fructidor.com as a privileged partner media for ten years now.
In 2007, the turnover of the Italian fruit and vegetable industry totalled 22.8 billion euros, an increase of 1.1% on 2006. Italy produced a total 23.8 million tonnes of fruit and vegetables; of this amount, 3.7 million tonnes were sold abroad (+5.6% compared to 2006), for a turnover of 3.36 million euros. Precisely in order to enhance its effectiveness as a linchpin between the profitable north European markets and the Mediterranean, Macfrut has always promoted meetings between international operators in the sector.
“This year’s edition saw 400 business meetings taking place between the most representative international companies from the Middle East, Turkey and South America,” commented Domenico Scarpellini, President of Cesena Fiera. “Our mission to promote internationalisation is also manifested in the new Macfrut International Project, a collective exhibition by Italian companies targeting overseas markets under the protective wing of Macfrut, an initiative which we hope to expand significantly in future editions.”
On the innovation front, plenty of space was set aside for the fresh-cut, ready-to-eat produce segment, including state-of-the-art processing solutions for this segment. Attention was also paid to the future outlook of a market which is booming throughout Europe. The first Fresh-Cut Produce Show brought together producers, packing companies and leading players in the distribution sector. Italy is Europe’s second biggest market behind Britain, with a turnover in 2007 of 700 million euros and growth in excess of 6% by value and 3% by volume.
