With the goal of increasing its pineapple exports, the 4th most exported agricultural product, which generated more than $18 million in 2017, Ghana has set up the Planting for Export and Development (PED) program.
Ghana Export Promotion Authority (GEPA), in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture to achieve the goals of the PED program, distributed to producers 2 million of Smooth Cayenne pineapple suckers.
A sucker is a shoot from the root of a plant that can become self-sustaining and replanted as a new individual. It is an offspring genetically identical to the parent plant.
The DEP program started in 2017, allowing free distribution of more than 6 million pineapple suckers to beneficiaries. GEPA plans to deliver a total of 13.3 million pineapple suckers this year. These suckers will ensure better quality and higher volumes that will lead to increased exports.
Pineapple was the 4th most exported agricultural product in the non-traditional export category and generated revenue for Ghana of more than $18 million in 2017, an increase of 31.5% compared to 2016.
