Fruit and vegetable consumption has fallen in Italy

The volumes of fresh fruit and vegetables purchased by Italian consumers in the 1st half of 2022 varied compared to the 1st half of 2021 by -11% in volume
 
The CSO Italy Market Observatory study, based on GFK Italia data, reveals that the consumption of fresh fruit and vegetables fell in the first half of 2022.
 
.Volumes: the quantities of fresh fruit and vegetables purchased by Italian families amounted to 2.735 million tonnes. That is a variation of -11% compared to the same period of 2021 and -13.7% compared to the same period of 2020.
 
.Value: the total value of these purchases of fresh fruit and vegetables amounted to EUR 6 billion. That is a variation of -4% compared to the 1st half of 2021 and -6.9% compared to the 1st half of 2020.
 
.Fruit: the volume purchased by Italian consumers reached nearly 1.4 million tonnes. That is a variation of -9% compared to the 1st half of 2021 and a variation of -16% comparing to 5 years. Almost all species show negative results: oranges (-8%), apples (-6%), strawberries (-13%), lemons (-17%), kiwis (-4%); except bananas which remain stable and clementines (+6%).
 
.Vegetables: the volume purchased by Italian consumers reaches 1.330 million tons. That is a variation of -2% compared to the 1st half of 2021. All species show negative results: potatoes (-9%), tomatoes (-12%), lettuces (-4%), carrots (-7% ), zucchini (-16%), onions (-9%), fennel (-31%), eggplant (-19%), peppers (-6%), artichoke (-10%).
 
 
.Positive variation: for the IVth Range segment, salad category, which shows a variation of +7% compared to the 1st half of 2021 with a volume of 54,000 tonnes of goods purchased.
