IATA (International Air Transport Association) has released data on global air cargo markets indicating that demand has fallen for the tenth consecutive month.
According to this IATA data, air freight demand, measured in freight tonne-kilometers (FTKs), fell by 3.9% in August 2019 compared to the same period in 2018. This is the 10th consecutive month of lower freight volumes, the longest period since the 2008 global financial crisis.
On the contrary, freight capacity, measured in available tonne-kilometers (tonne-kilometers), increased by 2% in August 2019. Capacity growth has now outpaced demand growth for the 16th consecutive month.
Air freight continues to face severe challenges due to the intensification of the US-China trade war, as well as weak key economic indicators and growing political uncertainties. World trade volumes are 1% lower than 1 year ago.
