Guidelines released to improve productivity in greenhouse vegetables

South Korea’s Rural Development Administration (RDA) has issued technical guidance to help greenhouse vegetable growers improve production stability and strengthen disease management in protected cultivation systems.

The recommendations focus on maintaining consistent growing conditions and reducing plant stress, which can make crops more vulnerable to disease. Authorities advised growers to monitor greenhouse environments closely, especially during periods of rapid temperature and humidity changes that can encourage the spread of fungal and bacterial infections.

The guidance highlights several practical measures to support stable yields. Growers are encouraged to ensure proper ventilation to prevent excessive moisture build-up, manage irrigation carefully to avoid waterlogging, and remove plant residues or infected material promptly to limit disease transmission inside greenhouses. Regular inspection of crops is also recommended so that early symptoms can be identified and addressed before outbreaks spread.

Officials also stressed the importance of maintaining good sanitation practices in production areas, including cleaning tools and equipment and controlling pest populations that can carry plant diseases. Balanced fertilisation and careful crop management were identified as key factors in supporting plant health and improving productivity.

The administration noted that strengthening routine management practices and responding quickly to plant health risks can help reduce production losses and maintain reliable output from intensive vegetable facilities, where disease pressure can escalate rapidly if conditions are not carefully controlled.
