This region is a very important market (top three) for exports of fresh Turkish fruits and vegetables. According to the 2nd President of the Chamber of Agriculture of Seyhan, in the south-east of Turkey, about 10% of fresh fruits and vegetables exports pass through the Harbour border crossing, accessed from the north of Iraq, whose security has been strengthened in recent days.
He adds that if this border closes, prices of fresh products on the domestic market could fall. New strategies will have to be put in place to gain access to southern Iraq. The opening of a new access door can even be envisaged, according to the source.
What is clear is that the whole fresh fruit and vegetable sector is waiting and already looking for alternative solutions to sell its products.
