Apple growing areas fall

The Brazilian production of apples for 2012/2013 will be lower than the previous year.
Fewer growing areas for apples were announced in the latest report from the USDA, U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The area covered by apples in Brazil is estimated at 36,950 hectares in 2012, a decrease of 5% compared to the areas identified in 2011. This will result in a decrease of the expected production to 1.19 million tons for 2012/2013 (
1.22 2011/2012).
The Santa Catarina region continues to be the largest producer of apples in Brazil, with 51% of the total, followed by Rio Grande do Sul with 44%. Brazil produces three main varieties of apples: Gala, Fuji and Eva.
