Kenya: an opportunity for horticultural technology

Flower cultivation accounts for 50% of the country’s fruit and vegetable exports, with a value of €745 million. Vegetables account for 30% of the value of exports, and avocados for 20%. The Kenyan agricultural sector is projected to contribute more than 23% of the country’s GDP in 2025. GDP growth is estimated at 4.9% in 2026, with inflation at 4%.

Enormous potential for irrigation and demand for postharvest technology

Irrigated crops account for 60% of exports while occupying just 2.3% of cultivated land. There are approximately 4.5 million hectares of potential irrigated farmland yet to be developed. The demand for biocontrol and postharvest technology is enormous, as evidenced by repeated incidents involving MRL levels in the European market. This led Kenyan authorities to suspend avocado exports by sea in 2025.

8,000 metric tons of flowers exported per month

Naivasha is Kenya’s main production area, located 90 km from Nairobi. There are 55 flower farms and more than 2,000 ha of greenhouses. They employ more than 100,000 workers. GlobalGAP, MRL, EU, and MPS-ABS are the certifications required by European buyers. Kenya accounts for 38 to 40% of Europe’s cut flower imports. Its international collaboration in technology, finance, and training is essential for continued growth.

884,100 metric tons of avocados

Kenya produced approximately 884,100 metric tons of avocados in 2024, representing a 34% increase. More than 966,000 producers are engaged in avocado cultivation, accounting for approximately 75% of production. 70% of the plantations grow the Hass variety. Kenya is one of the top five suppliers of avocados to the EU, with Spain as its leading customer. Its exports to Europe fell by 42% due to pesticide residue issues.
