Fisticuffs in the Milanese Wholesale Market
The force test held between the Milan's City Council and the Market's wholesalers reaches its climax.
Mr Albuzza Alberto, President of the Wholesalers Association, explained to us that they cannot and do not want to go on working in these conditions. The building is outdated: the ceilings crumble, when it rains it's all flooded, frequent power cuts, and this happens in an asbestos-built construction.
All Markets in Northern Italy have been renovated or rebuilt apart from the Milan's Market that seems to be 1,000 years old.
Since several years, many requests have been handed over the SOGEMI (company that supervises the Market) but nothing changed.
So, the wholesalers decided to stop paying their rents and keep these on a bank account till they receive concrete proposals. This should have some effect because the City Council, owner of the Wholesale Market, is studying this matter and should make proposals within 3 months.
