Malaysia last year imported onions from 24 countries. India's decision to halt shipments had affected the market but resumption of shipments is now helping to stabilize the onion market in Malaysia
According to the Ministry of Internal Trade and Consumer Affairs, India, which is Malaysia's main supplier, has recovered from the recent floods and has resumed exporting its onions. The onion supply is now correct, the price has stabilized, and the supply is sufficient to meet consumer needs until August.
Malaysia last year imported 489,297 tonnes of onions from 24 countries, including India (31%), Pakistan (24%), China (22%), the Netherlands ( 10%), Thailand (7%), New Zealand (3%) and various other countries (4%).
The diversification of the countries of origin must be maintained according to the ministry which emphasizes that this strategy aims to guarantee that the supply remains sufficient if one of the supplier countries encounters problems (drought, floods, earthquakes, etc.) which may potentially affect prices.
