Thai durian looking for new markets

Durian production in Thailand is this year estimated at around 860,000 tonnes, an increase of 25% from the previous year. 

 

 

 

Durian farmers in the Chanthaburi province, the main productingn region fear an overabundance of fruits for this year and the next. These producers have asked the Ministry of Commerce to seek new export markets for durian.

 

 

 

Despite strong demand from China, the main export market, producers believe that the Chinese economic slowdown is causing a Chinese demand for low quality fruits.

 

 

 

According to Thai producers, the durian production in the country will continue to grow and the addition of new productions from neighboring countries will influence market prices, likely to cause a sharp decline.
