Organic products "Made in France" are gaining ground
FJ
The French organic production progress leads to a decrease in imports.
In 2012, France had 24,425 organic farms (+6% compared to 2011 and +41% in 2 years) covering 1,032,941 hectares (+22% compared to 2011). The increase of surfaces allows to respond better to consumer demand.
The share of exterior supplies has decreased, passing from 38% in 2009 to 32% in 2011 and 25% in 2012. Among these imports: exotic products (coffee, tea, cocoa, bananas and other fruits, ...) or not available on the French territory, their value is estimated at 36% of total imports. Very few products available in France (rice, Mediterranean citrus, ...) account for 22%. Finally relay purchases of French offer and / or range supplements (fresh and processed fruits and vegetables, ...) for 42% of imports.
France is also an exporter of organic products: in 2011, nearly 1,150 companies sold for export, sales were estimated at € 309 million in 2012 (€ 192 million in 2011). They consist mainly of organic wine (58%), groceries (18%) and fruit and vegetables (13%).
