In Kenya, the start of 2021 is very satisfactory for avocado exports. During the first quarter, the exported volume reached 26,000 tonnes of avocados, i.e. almost + 75% compared to the volume shipped during the same period in 2020
According to Chinese media Xihua, which reports an interview with Kenyan government officials, the country exported 26,000 tonnes of avocados during the first quarter of 2021. An increase of almost + 75% compared to the 15,000 tonnes exported during 1st quarter 2020.
In this interview, Benjamin Tito, director of the Horticultural Crops Directorate, indicated that the main markets for Kenyan avocados are Europe and the Middle East. The volume exported to China is still low, but Kenyan exporters are still trying to meet the conditions set by the Chinese authorities to succeed in exporting these fruits in large quantities.
According to Benjamin Tito, the increase in export volumes comes from the increase in production following the improvement of crops and the increase in the areas of avocados cultivated in the country.
To maintain optimum quality for exported avocados and to avoid the harvest of immature fruit, Kenya has restricted avocado exports between November and January of each year. The main season runs from March to September. Usually the Fuerte variety is available from February and the Hass variety is available from March.
In 2020 Kenya exported 72,000 tonnes of avocados, up from 59,000 tonnes in 2019.
