The global shortage is expected to boost blackcurrant prices
MD
The New Zealand producers should take advantage of the global shortage of blackcurrant and see prices increasing.
A disastrous season of blackcurrant in Europe and Eastern Europe, which is very important in the world production, should result in a halving of European production. This reduction will cause a shortage and rising prices worldwide.
The International Blackcurrant Association anticipated that this shortfall could double blackcurrants prices. Prices for growers are expected to double to about $2NZ per kg (€ 1.17), that represents a good opportunity for producers who export 95% of their crops. The next harvest will start at the end of December.
