MD
Freshfel Europe, in cooperation with Shaffer, has unveiled its forecast for citrus production in the Mediterranean basin.
2011/2012 citrus production in the Mediterranean is expected to reach a total of 18.4 million tons, a level equivalent to last season. While production in the Mediterranean countries of the EU will decrease by 5%, other countries will increase their production by 6%.
Spain should see a drop in production by 11% after record levels last year. Spanish production is forecast at 5.5 million tonnes. Greece and Cyprus are expecting a decrease of 19% and 4% respectively. Italy is expected to register an 8% increase. Outside the EU, Turkey and Israel should reach 11% increases over the previous year.
Freshfel said its estimates are based on information available in October. It is still early in the season and weather conditions, such as rainfall, can affect the final production quantities.
