At this time the service is only available in Farmington (Arkansas) and concerns a reduced variety of products whose total must not exceed 2.2 kg. The drone's range is restricted to 1.8 km around its base.
Walmart, the world's No. 1 retailer, has announced the launch of a home air delivery service, in partnership with the start-up DroneUp. This new service is available in the city of Farmington (Arkansas) and in the coming months also in the city of Rogers and in the city of Bentonville where Walmart is headquartered.
Outside a Walmart store, a 'control tower' is equipped with cameras to follow the evolution of the drone which is loaded with a package not exceeding 2.2 kg. The range is limited to 1 mile (1.8 km) around the base to be in compliance with the regulations which stipulate that a civilian drone must not operate autonomously out of the sight of the operator.
The shipping cost is $ 10. Delivery can reach its destination approximately 30 minutes after ordering, provided the weather is good enough to allow the flight.
Last year Walmart with DroneUp made hundreds of test deliveries for Covid-19 self-test kits. These tests have shown that delivery within minutes is possible. Walmart wants to continue the efforts and eventually be able to provide the service over longer distances.
