These delays will continue for the next few months believes CIPS which predicts that the new certifications will further increase the required paperwork (Photo: spainbox.com).
Difficulties at the UK-EU border were expected to subside quickly after an uncertain start to the year. But new customs formalities continue to cause problems and delays.
A survey conducted by CIPS (Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply) of 350 supply chain managers in the UK reveals that the situation at the border between the UK and the EU is worsening. Around 63% of businesses surveyed experienced delays of at least 2-3 days in getting goods to the UK, compared to just 38% in a similar survey in January.
According to this survey, almost half of companies (47%) cite the time it takes for customs to process administrative formalities as the main reason for the delays. These delays come as many new import certifications have not yet entered into force. The additional controls which should be applied gradually from April will certainly cause a further delay.
“We are in the 2nd month of the new arrangements and the hope that delays at the border will be reduced, as freight volumes return to normal and customs systems get used to the new processes, has not subsided. not materialized. What is even more worrying is that delays continue to grow, putting increasing pressure on UK supply chains and affecting the on-time delivery of much-needed products ”a commented Dr John Glen, CIPS economist and visiting scholar at the Cranfield School of Management.
