MINAGRI, the Ministry of Agriculture announced a few months ago that Peru had reached the rank of second world exporter of avocadoes (variety HASS), behind Mexico.

At the recent WAC (World Avocado Congress) held in Lima, Peruvian professionals have stressed that this position could evolve from No. 2. Peru already has 25,000 hectares of HASS avocados and the sector continues to expand acreage. Additional areas will result thus higher production, but the country will face another challenge.

Its production of HASS avocados lasts only six months while its direct competitor, Mexico, succeeds in producing all year. The choice of additional areas will be crucial to allow production to increase.

Demand is steadily increasing; a major customer, the United States recorded an average consumption of 2.4 kg / person / year and demand is still growing.
