Banana exports from Maputo province in 2021 reached 223,603 tons, which represents 80% of the total 279,504 tons produced last year (Photo: madeinmozambique.com).
The province of Maputo, located in the south of Mozambique, benefits from very favorable conditions for the production of fruits, in particular mangoes, citrus fruits, papayas, lychees and especially bananas.
According to a local daily which reports the words of Mariamo José, the director of the Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Fisheries in Maputo, over the past twenty years significant investments have been made in the province for the production of fruit , especially bananas. The cultivated area now extends to around 5,300 hectares which in 2021 produced 279,504 tons of bananas.
Banana exports from Maputo province in 2021 reached 223,603 tons, which represents 80% of the total 279,504 tons produced last year.
For these bananas from Mozambique, the most important export markets are South Africa, Botswana and Swaziland. Bananas exported to South Africa are then shipped to Asian and European markets.
