With greenhouse cultivation, banana production is possible almost everywhere. Here at Wageningen University in the Netherlands the first "Dutch" banana harvest was created in December 2018.
A new greenhouse crop project has been launched in Tajikistan. These greenhouses are for the production of tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers but one of them will be dedicated to banana production.
In the district of Spitamen, located in the north-central part of Sughd province, members of the Dustobod 2 farm launched the 4-hectare greenhouse project for hydroponics of tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and bananas.
Construction of the first greenhouse is underway and will cover 1 hectare. According to forecasts, the 25,000 to 30,000 tomato plants will allow a first harvest of around 120 tonnes in December. Then a second harvest is planned in March-April 2020. The commissioning of 2 other greenhouses for the cultivation of cucumbers and peppers is planned for 2020.
The 4th greenhouse will be commissioned in 2021 for the production of bananas. With about 1,000 banana plants per 1 hectare of greenhouses, production could reach 45 to 50 tons.
