Peru sends first banana shipment to China

Peru has shipped its first consignment of bananas to China, opening a new market for growers in the country’s northern production regions, according to Peru’s Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (MIDAGRI).

The shipment consisted of 20 tonnes of fruit packed at the facility in Olmos, in the Lambayeque region.

The bananas came from certified and inspected farms. SENASA, Peru’s agricultural health authority, supervised the process to ensure traceability and compliance with the phytosanitary protocol agreed with China.

The new access is expected to support market diversification and create additional export opportunities for producers in northern Peru.

Peru exported around 140,000 tonnes of bananas in 2025. The Netherlands and the United States were its largest destinations, followed by Italy, Belgium, South Korea and Japan.

Piura accounts for around 80% of Peru’s banana exports, while Lambayeque represents 16% and La Libertad approximately 5%.
