Jordan expects higher production this year and wants to boost exports.
After a drop in exports last year (-12.4%) and the previous year (-11.3%) Jordan's agricultural sector sees new prospects.
Jordan exported 686,000 tonnes of fruit and vegetables in 2016 and 783,000 tonnes in 2015, according to data from the Ministry of Agriculture. This can be explained by the closure of borders with Iraq and Syria, which are essential for reaching regional and European markets.
Recently, Jordan has shipped cargo of vegetables to Palestine, the region is a promising market for Jordanian products. The Ministry of Agriculture has announced ongoing talks with Austrian companies to export Jordanian agri-food products to Europe.
