In Spain the area planted with garlic decreases by 16% from one year to the next

Andalusia suffered the greatest reduction in planted area, mainly due to severe water restrictions caused by the recent drought.

 

Mesa Nacional del Ajo (National Garlic Table) reported that the area devoted to garlic cultivation in Spain decreased by 16% compared to last season.

 

Several factors influenced this decline, including low profitability achieved by farmers, labor recruitment problems and restrictions on access to water, which affected the competitiveness of garlic in the market. .

 

Additionally, challenges related to plant protection products persist, highlighting that the lack of effective products to combat pests and diseases has significantly increased costs, reducing production and complicating crop management.

 

Concerning the garlic market, even if prices have increased, this increase has not offset the increase in production costs.
