Adonis joins Metro

Canadian Metro Inc has entered the ethnic food market by becoming the majority partner of Marché Adonis, a supermarket group specializing in Mediterranean products.
 
Metro Inc., the largest food retailer in Quebec, will invest millions of dollars in the growing ethnic market through the confirmed purchase of 55% of Adonis supermarkets and its distributor and importer, Produits Phoenicia.

Adonis supermarkets have five outlets in the Montreal area and nearly one thousand employees. They offer a wide range of food products: meat, cheese, pastries, nuts, fruits and vegetables.

By becoming a majority partner Metro will provide resources to speed up the growth of Adonis. The chain plans to expand elsewhere in Quebec and Toronto.

The niche market for ethnic food is growing as immigration increases and people travel more and seek to incorporate new food into their diet.
