The region of Murcia expects a 30% reduction in its production of Iceberg lettuce in the coming weeks.

Proexport, the Association of producers and exporters of fruits and vegetables of the region of Murcia, estimates 30% reduction in the production of Iceberg lettuce.

Murcia recorded the warmest winter since 2007 with the highest temperatures in Spain, to 27.2 ° C. These mild temperatures have led to an advance of 15 days in production throughout the last 3 months and will cause a reduction of yields in the coming weeks.

The production is then reduced as demand increases in Germany and the United Kingdom where the spring promotes the consumption of salads. In 2013 Murcia exported 484,639 tons of lettuce to the value of € 395 million. Murcia and Almeria are the main suppliers of lettuce in Europe, especially in Germany (28%), the UK (20%), France (15%).
