In Mexico, the state of Jalisco has just recorded a 29.4% increase in volume for its avocado exports. No avocados from the state of Jalisco has been dispatched to the United States, where only avocados from the state of Michoacán have been authorized to enter this market.
According to APEAJAL, the association of producers and exporters of avocados from Jalisco, the volume of avocados exported reached 110,000 tonnes last year. An increase of 29.4% compared to the 85,000 tonnes exported in 2018.
These exports went to Canada (35%), Japan (25%), European countries (30%) including France, Spain, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Belgium. And 10% went to Hong Kong, the Middle East, Central America and South America.
As for the US market, the new trade deal is unlikely to open the doors to avocados grown in the state of Jalisco. The state of Michoacán, which produces the vast majority of avocados from Mexico, remains the only state authorized to export to the United States.
