Blueberries from Argentina are shipped by plane to their main destination: the United States (65% of exports).
Between 2015 and 2016 blueberry exports increased by 15% in volume, totaling 17 100 tonnes in 2016. These positive results mask a sharp decline in value, sales prices in 2016 were 25% lower than last year.
According to the latest census, Argentina has 2,750 hectares of blueberries, distributed in the North (Salta, Tucumán), North-East (Corrientes, Entre Ríos) regions and in some others, including the province of Buenos Aires. Production has increased continuously and exports are mainly destined for the United States (65%), the European Union and the United Kingdom (30%) and Canada (4%).
Since the beginning of production, Argentina has preferred to export by air. So that the fruits reach the American consumers in 2 to 10 days, depending on the region, instead of 4 weeks per boat.
However, demand has given rise to new competitors, such as Peru, which offers a production (25,000 tons) at the same time as that of Argentina and at a much lower cost. Argentine professionals want to restore their competitiveness by acting on several elements, including infrastructure and logistical costs.
