Belgians prefer carrots and apples

The consumption of fruits and vegetables continues to progress in Belgium.
The study conducted at the request of VLAM (Flemish Centre of marketing of agricultural products) from 5000 Belgian families show an average consumption of 50 kg of fresh fruit, 40 kg of fresh vegetables, 30 kg of fruits and vegetables.
Last year the carrots have become No. 1 vegetable with consumption of 6.3 kg per person (+21% compared to 2011) in front of 6.1 kg tomatoes / person (-3%) and onions 4,5 kg / person (+15%). Apples remain in top of the ranking Fruits with 9.8 kg / person in front of oranges 8.7 kg / person. Banana sales increased by +26% and +17% of mandarins.
The study highlights a change in eating habits with a net upmarket. Iceberg lettuce is preferred over salad lettuce, cherry tomato and cluster tomatoes still progress against tomatoes in bulk, demand for berries and small fruits is confirmed.
