The Real hypermarket chain took first place in Poland
The Real hypermarket chain took first place in the ranking of large Polish retailers compiled by the weekly magazine Polityka. The chain’s position improved in comparison with last year’s ranking, when it was in fifth place. Tesco is the runner up in 2008, whereas it was in sixth place a year ago. Last year’s leader, Carrefour, slipped into fourth place.
The survey, carried out by GfK Polonia, was designed to assess prices and the quality of service provided by the hypermarket chains. In terms of price levels, Auchan takes pride of place and is followed by Tesco and Real. With regard to the quality of service, Real, E.Leclerc and Tesco are the leading three.
The authors who complied the ranking bought a standard set of products at three random stores of each chain. Interestingly, the average value of the shopping cart declined in comparison with last year by 4.5%.
This, according to the authors, is a result of increased competition from other retail formats: supermarkets and, particularly, the discount stores. Hypermarkets are trying to defend their positions by cutting prices and margins, which affects the suppliers, who are forced to offer products at more substantial discounts in comparison with last year’s prices.
The ranking also covered three supermarket chains: Intermarcheis the front runner and is followed by Carrefour Expressand Polomarket. The survey demonstrates that the shopping cart in supermarkets is, on average, around 12% more expensive than the same set of products bought at hypermarkets.
