Valencia researchers improve disease resistance in traditional melon and alficoz varieties

Early trials show that the improved melon plants are more vigorous and produce a greater number of larger fruits.
Researchers in Spain are working to make two traditional Valencian melon varieties more resistant to viruses and fungal diseases.
The trial is taking place at the Sinyent Experimental Farm, managed by the Valencian Farmers’ Association AVA-ASAJA. It is being led by the Centre for the Conservation and Improvement of Valencian Agrodiversity at the Polytechnic University of Valencia.
The project focuses on Meló Groc d’Ontinyent and Alficòs, also known as snake melon. Both are valued for their distinctive qualities and their importance to Valencia’s food heritage, but their vulnerability to disease has made them difficult to grow commercially.
Improving resistance without losing quality
Researchers are using conventional breeding methods to introduce resistance to major viruses spread by aphids and whiteflies, as well as certain fungal diseases.
The aim is to preserve the flavour and other characteristics of the traditional varieties while making the plants better able to withstand common crop problems. Stronger resistance could also reduce the need for plant-protection treatments and lower production costs for growers.
Early results from the farm show clear differences between the traditional plants and the improved lines. The resistant plants are more vigorous, produce more fruit and develop larger melons.
According to AVA-ASAJA, these improvements could increase yields and make the varieties more profitable to grow. They could also help farmers use fewer treatments against the insects that spread viruses, supporting more sustainable production.
AVA-ASAJA president Cristóbal Aguado said traditional varieties can only survive commercially when growers have access to plants that combine the quality demanded by the market with stronger disease resistance.
He added that the project shows how agricultural innovation can help protect local crop heritage while creating new opportunities for farmers.
The research forms part of a project funded by the Valencian regional government.
