The kiwi is the 1st export product, in the Fruits & Vegetables category, in terms of value for Greece. The country has now become, after New Zealand and Italy, the 3rd world exporter of kiwis.
In Greece, kiwi cultivation is recent, having started in the early 1970s with a first plantation in the Thessaly region, in the center of the country. Kiwi cultivation has expanded and the volumes produced and exported have increased rapidly.
According to the association of exporters Incofruit Hellas, in 2007/08 the volume exported reached 38,000 tonnes of kiwifruit. Since then, the sector has recorded remarkable performances: with a multiplication by 2.3 of the volume exported with 91,199 tonnes in 2013 then again a multiplication by 2 with 183,599 tonnes exported in 2021/22 and for a total value of 228 million EUR and more than 10,100 active kiwifruit producers.
According to the analyzes of experts in the sector, Greece could export around 600,000 tonnes of kiwis within 5 years, for a value of 400 to 500 million EUR.
