According to statements by Agriculture Council Minister Chen Chi-chung, Taiwanese pineapple exports could reach 30,000 tons by the end of the year. The majority of this volume being intended for Japan.
Last year, after China's ban on Taiwanese pineapples, Japan imported 18,000 tons of Taiwanese pineapples. So far this year, Japan has ordered 20,000 tons of Taiwanese pineapples.
Agriculture and Food Agency Director General Hu Jong-i said, "Japanese demand for Taiwanese pineapples reflects the high quality of our fruit." Despite customs duties of around 17% in Japan, consumers buy Taiwanese fruit rather than other sources.
Among other export destinations, Taiwanese pineapples were shipped for the first time to the Middle East, to Kuwait precisely.
