Chilean fruit sector urges calm over possible US tariff

The industry is closely following developments after a new trade proposal emerged in the United States.
Chile’s fruit export industry has urged caution following reports that the United States could impose a 125% tariff on Chilean products.
According to Frutas de Chile, the measure is currently only part of a recommendation process within the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) and is not a final or binding decision. The industry association stressed that there is no official confirmation that such a tariff will be applied.
Frutas de Chile said it is closely monitoring developments and remains in contact with Chilean authorities and trade representatives. The organisation noted that the proposal is still under review and could change before any official action is taken.
The association also highlighted the long-standing trade relationship between Chile and the United States, supported by the United States–Chile Free Trade Agreement, which has facilitated agricultural trade between both countries for more than two decades.
Exporters should wait for official information before drawing conclusions, as the recommendation does not automatically result in new tariffs being introduced.
