Benguet loses 5.8 tonnes of vegetables after rain disrupts trade

Around 5.8 tonnes of vegetables were lost in two documented cases in Benguet after persistent rain affected product quality and slowed movement through trading centres, the Philippine Department of Agriculture reported.
One farmer harvested 2.5 tonnes of Chinese cabbage. The load spent two nights and two days waiting to enter the La Trinidad trading centre. Because the cabbage had been loaded wet, it began to rot and could no longer be sold.
A separate four-tonne carrot shipment faced a similar problem. Only 700 kg found buyers; 200 kg remained at the trading post and another 3.1 tonnes were discarded after quality deteriorated.
During August, the regional agriculture office helped 46 farmer organisations move 32.83 tonnes of vegetables through direct channels, with an estimated gross value of PHP 1.2 million (about USD 19,500, using the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas rate of PHP 61.601/USD on August 24, 2026).
