Prices obtained by producers in one of the main regions where the cherries are grown, Sultandagı in the Afyonkarahisar department, have been satisfing for the first time in 15 years, according to their own words. The Napoleon variety did not sell below the threshold of 10 Turkish lire (1 Euro = 4.06 Turkish lire) despite a large harvest in this region.
Most of the production of this mainly organic region goes to European countries, especially Germany, but also to Russia and Iraq.
A producer of cherries in the surrounding village, Ali Yıldız, explains that their work is difficult but that this year the farmer has made a profit since 2001-2002. The amount of cherries harvested was lower in other regions, which kept prices at a good level. The export is done directly after a pre-cooling operation at 2 degrees.
