Moroccan exports benefit from Brexit. UK imports more and more tomatoes from Morocco, rather than Spanish or Dutch tomatoes.
According to a recent study by Rabobank, Dutch tomato exports to the UK have declined significantly since Brexit. Thus in 2020 the volume imported by the United Kingdom of tomatoes from the Netherlands was 40 million kg lower than the volume imported in 2018. At the same time, the volume of tomatoes from Spain fell by 15 million kg.
Brexit is said to be the main reason. Trade with the UK has become more difficult for Spanish or Dutch exporters with complicated customs formalities and regulations.
On the contrary, the volumes of Moroccan tomatoes in the UK market have increased on average by 3% per year and continue to grow. Morocco has become an important competitor for Spain and the Netherlands in the UK tomato market.
The Rabobank study predicts that on the UK market the volumes previously achieved by Dutch tomato exports will be difficult to achieve in the future.
