Torrential floods in Thailand will influence the price of food throughout Asia.
Thailand has experienced the worst flooding in more than 50 years and the agricultural sector is severely affected.
Torrential monsoon rains caused rivers to overflow and flooding has affected nearly two thirds of the country with 26 of the 77 regions under water.
Thailand is the leading rice exporter in the world and the flood damage
will weigh on prices. Industry professionals estimate that 300,000 ton of rice exports will be delayed and may lead to higher prices throughout Asia.
Vegetable crops are also affected. Thailand is likely to increase its imports of fruits and vegetables significantly, especially as neighboring countries are also affected by heavy monsoon rains.
