Greenhouse production: The average size of farms was multiplied by 8

In the Netherlands, while the number of greenhouse vegetable producers decreased by 85% between 1980 and 2017, the average farm size increased by 8 times and the total area under greenhouses increased by 7%.
According to data from CBS (Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek) greenhouse vegetable production has undergone various changes over the last 40 years. The number of producers fell from almost 8000 in 1980 to 1260 in 2017, a decrease of about 85%. At the same time, the area devoted to greenhouse vegetables has increased by 7% covering nearly 5000 hectares.
Farms are growing more and more. In 1980, the average area under greenhouse vegetables was 0.6 hectares per farm. In 2000 the average area had doubled to 1.2 hectares. Then 3 hectares 5 years ago. In 2017, the greenhouse vegetable producer grows on 5 hectares on average.
Production levels increased by around 36% between 2000 and 2017. With peaks for the production of zucchini (138%) tomatoes (75%) and aubergines (61%).
