Brazil, a new destination for Belgian pears

From the next harvest, Belgian pears will be exported to the Brazilian market.
Agreement between Belgium and Brazil on the export of Belgian pears from the next harvest. Potential volume 25 000 tonnes per year, or 7% of Belgian production.
After negotiations began in April 2014, an official agreement was reached at the end of January. The Belgian and Brazilian ministers of agriculture signed the documents authorizing the importation into Brazil of Belgian pears.
The importation of Belgian pears will not compete with Brazilian production, the fruits are harvested at different seasons.
Belgium exported approximately 140 000 tons of pears to Russia (40% of the national production of pears Conference), since the embargo the professionals have sought new markets .
