According to a study, global purchases of imported bananas totaled $15.6 billion in 2018 and 15 countries bought 80.6% of this total amount.
The study published by World Top Exports indicates that global purchases of imported bananas totaled $15.6 billion in 2018. The ranking of the 15 countries that imported the highest dollar value in 2018:
1. United States: $2.8 billion (18.1% of total banana imports)
2. Belgium: $1.3 billion (8.6%)
3. Russia: $1.2 billion (7.4%)
4. Netherlands: $968.8 million (6.2%)
5. Germany: $944.8 million (6.1%)
6 Japan: $913.4 million (5.9%)
7. China: $896.8 million (5.7%)
8. United Kingdom: $769.5 million (4.9%)
9. France:$622.9 million (4%)
10.Italy: $564.9 million (3.6%)
11.Canada: $423.5 million (2.7%)
12 South Korea: $360.2 million (2.3%)
13.Poland: $319.6 million (2%)
14 Spain: $246.6 million (1.6%)
15.Argentina: $217.5 million (1.4%).
Among this ranking, the fastest growing banana markets since 2014 are the Netherlands (+ 181.5%), France (+ 22%), Russia (+ 20.6%) and Japan (+ 12.6%). A few countries recorded a drop in their purchases of imported bananas: Germany (-16.2%), Belgium (-11.3%), the United Kingdom (-7.3%) and Canada (- 0.8%).
By continent, Europe consumed the highest dollar value of imported bananas in 2018, with purchases valued at $8.8 billion or 56.3% of the world total. North America was in 2nd place with 20.8% followed by Asia with 19.1%.
